Support
Licorice plays the movies and shows on your own Jellyfin server. The answers below cover the common questions. For anything else, write to us.
Tell us your Apple TV model, its tvOS version, the Licorice version (CONFIG → About) and your Jellyfin server's version, and what happened.
Getting started
You need an Apple TV with tvOS 26 or later, and a Jellyfin server it can reach. Jellyfin is free, open-source media server software that you run yourself; jellyfin.org explains how to set one up.
- Finding your server. Licorice looks for servers on your local network. If yours isn't listed, type its address, such as
http://192.168.1.20:8096at home orhttps://jellyfin.example.com. Plainhttpworks only for local addresses: a private IP address like the one above, or a name ending in.local. Every other address, a Tailscale one included, needshttps. - Signing in. Use your Jellyfin user name and password, or choose Quick Connect: the Apple TV shows a code, and you enter it in Quick Connect on another device that's already signed in to the same server, such as the Jellyfin web app. Quick Connect has to be turned on in the server's dashboard.
Playback
- Slow to start, or buffering. Open CONFIG → Connection → CHECK CONNECTION. It measures your network, how quickly your server answers and your link speed, then says whether a slow stream is more likely your connection or your server.
- Quality. With Max streaming quality set to Auto (CONFIG → Playback), Licorice plays at full quality and steps down by itself if your connection can't keep up.
- Converted video. When a file can't play on Apple TV as it is, your server converts it as it plays. That work happens on the server, so a busy or slow server can hold playback up even on a fast network. INFO in the player shows whether a video is played as it is or converted.
- Resume points and watched status are kept by your server, so they match your other Jellyfin apps.
Report a problem
CONFIG → Report a problem → SEND REPORT (or SEND REPORT when playback fails) uploads a short report to your server's log folder, for its administrator: formats and timings, never your password or what you watched. The report goes to your server, not to us. To tell us about a problem, email us; your administrator can attach the report.
4K and Dolby Vision
- What it is. Everything in Licorice is free. A one-time in-app purchase plays 4K and Dolby Vision at full quality; without it, those titles play in HD. Dolby Vision needs a TV that supports it.
- On another Apple TV. Sign in to the App Store with the same Apple Account, then choose CONFIG → Upgrade → RESTORE PURCHASE. The upgrade isn't shared through Family Sharing.
- Refunds are handled by Apple, at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Signing out
CONFIG → Server → SIGN OUT removes this Apple TV's session, its caches and its playback record. Your server's administrator can also sign the device out from the Jellyfin dashboard.
Privacy
Licorice talks to your server and nothing else: no account with us, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Read the privacy policy; the app shows the same text at CONFIG → About → PRIVACY POLICY.
