Privacy Policy
The short version
Licorice is a player for your own Jellyfin media server. It talks to that server and to nothing else. We don't run any servers for the app, we don't receive your data, we share nothing with anyone, and the app contains no analytics, advertising, tracking or crash-reporting code.
What the app does with your information
Your media server
To work, Licorice connects to a Jellyfin server that you (or someone who invited you) run. Everything the app sends goes only to that server:
- Sign-in. If you sign in with a username and password, the password is sent to your server once, to obtain an access token. The app never stores your password. If you use Quick Connect, no password is involved.
- Access token. The token your server issues is stored in your device's Keychain, on this device only (it is not synced to other devices or iCloud).
- Device details. Like every Jellyfin app, Licorice tells your server which device is connecting: the app name and version, the hardware model as the device name (such as "Apple TV 4K"; never your personal device name), and a random device identifier created when the app is first installed. Your server's administrator can see these in the Jellyfin dashboard. The identifier stays the same when you sign out and back in, so your server recognises the device.
- What you watch. The app reports playback start, progress and stop to your server, which is how resume points, "Continue Watching" and watched status work. This goes to your server only.
- Measuring the connection. If a video is slow to start or keeps buffering, the app measures your connection by downloading a little test data from your server, lowers the streaming quality ("Auto"), and remembers that on your device for a few hours. Nothing about it goes anywhere else.
- Connection checks and problem reports. Only when you ask: CHECK CONNECTION pings your server and downloads test data from it to measure the speed, and REPORT A PROBLEM (in Settings, or SEND REPORT when playback fails) uploads a report to your server's log folder, where its administrator can read it. See "Problem reports" below for what a report contains.
What your server does with this information is up to its administrator and is governed by Jellyfin and by them, not by this policy.
Finding servers on your network
When you set up the app, it can search your local network for Jellyfin servers by sending a discovery message that only devices on your network can receive. You can also type your server's address instead.
On your device
The app keeps your server address, your settings (such as subtitle style and display preferences) and caches of artwork and library listings on your device, so it starts quickly. It also keeps a short record of your last twelve playback sessions (formats, delivery, stalls, errors and timings, but no titles) so that a problem report can describe them, even after the app has crashed.
Problem reports
REPORT A PROBLEM sends a report to your own server, never to us: what you said went wrong, the app and system versions, the connection check, and the playback record described above. Error messages in it have addresses, file paths and identifiers removed. It contains no password, no access token and no titles. Your server keeps it in its log folder for its administrator. The app never sends a report on its own.
Keeping and deleting your information
We hold no information about you, so there is nothing for us to keep or delete.
On your device, signing out deletes the stored session (your access token), the caches and the playback record. Deleting the app removes its settings and caches. The random device identifier is kept in the Keychain so that your server recognises the device; the system may keep it after the app is deleted, and it identifies nothing but this installation.
On your server, what Licorice sent (your watch history, the device entry, any problem reports) is kept and deleted by the server's administrator. You can sign this device out from the Jellyfin dashboard, which revokes its access token, and ask your administrator to delete anything else.
To withdraw your consent at any time, sign out of Licorice or delete it.
Purchases
If you buy the 4K & Dolby Vision upgrade, Apple handles the payment. The app asks the App Store, on your device, whether your Apple Account owns the upgrade; we never see your payment details or your Apple Account. Apple tells us about sales only in totals that don't identify you.
What we receive
Nothing from the app itself, and we share nothing with third parties. Apple may share crash reports and usage statistics with us if you've turned on Share with App Developers in your device's privacy settings, or if you're using a TestFlight beta. Those reports come from Apple, under Apple's terms, and don't include your server, your media or your account.
Children
Licorice is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update it here and in the app, and change the effective date. If a change affects what the app sends or to whom, we'll say so in the app's release notes.
